Skandinaviska Glassystem

SJØFARTSMUSEET, Helsingør

Denmark's new Maritime Museum in Helsingør is built down into, and along the inside of the old concrete dock. The major part of the museum is built underground around the old dock and is therefore mostly below sea level. The glazed bridges across the dock form the entrance as well as connect the natural exhibition route to full daylight passages and darker spaces as you move through the exhibition.

The Maritime Museum (Sjøfartsmuseeum) is placed in the middle of Helsingørs cultural center between “Kronborg” and “Kulturværftet”.

BIG architects wanted the old dock to be exposed and at the same time add something new, modern and spectacular. The only part showing as you walk towards the museum is a glass rail.

Skandinaviska Glassystem was chosen to deliver the external glass facades and glass railings. A new glazing system had to be developed to enable large movements.

The building won its category at World Architecture Festival 2015.
