TÄBY NEW TOWN HALL, Täby

The new town hall in Täby is the result of an open architecture competition that attracted 70 entries, with the jury selecting the proposal from White.

One of the reasons for creating a new town hall is that the existing building is technically unsound and would be too expensive to renovate to a level that meets modern requirements. The aim is to create a town hall characterized by openness and accessibility. The town hall shall be a good example of long-term environmental and economic sustainability.

Moreover, the new town hall will be closer to citizens, and more accessible, in downtown Täby. It will also be an interesting architectural addition to the urban environment around the square and the boulevard.

The architect wanted to create an interesting and dynamic façade with different depths, achieved by using external lamellas to stylishly decorate the exterior. The plating used for the façade is a copper and zinc alloy, which will age with dignity and appear more austere with the passing years.

The underlying system, SG-DrySeal (with prefabricated modules), is a well-proven assembly system that has been very easy to adapt to this particular project. Earlier projects provided extensive knowledge and experience of manufacturing and assembly methods, so the challenges here included adapting the system to materials chosen specifically for the project. Working with materials such as copper, which alter over time, is always a challenge in itself. Devising a solution for the external cladding of the façade lamellas (also copper) was also a tough nut to crack.

Which types of glass are used?

- The northwest-facing façade uses anti-condensation glass externally.
- All other façades use sun protection glass, type SNX 60/28.
- In general, the façade is also subject to strict noise requirements, which have been taken into account and affected the choice of glass and the decision to use a sealed façade.
