Saturday, October 18, 2009 was the inauguration of the new foyer of the theater Aftonstjärnan at Lindholmen in Göteborg. The extension is entirely in glass and steel was designed from an original building permit from 1903!
Lolo Jakobsson and Bertil Nolander who are the managers of Aftonstjärnan in collaboration with SG interpreted the old drawing and worked hard to make a design that pairs modern technology with early architecture. An articulated stairway inside the foyer acts both as the connection between the foyer and lounge, as well as seating’s for smaller shows.
The challenge in the project has been to connect the curved steel structure to the very old building and maintain the high precision that the glass demands. A full 3D scanning of the old façades made it possible to make an accurate 3D cad model in an early stage.
The system used is the “SG Distance” where the glass is distanced and floats about 15cm away from the supporting structure. The glasses are fastened by clips and a distanced with steel arms. This means that there is no need for aluminum profiles around the glass panes. Free glass edges both inside and outside gives a light and airy impression.
