All it takes is one look at the initial concept for this project to immediately sense the level of ambition behind it. A national landmark on the waterfront of the Norwegian capital. A sculptural shape that rises from the fjord, seamlessly connecting land and sea in a distinct silhouette.
This was the vision that won the Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta the open, international architectural competition for the New National Opera House in Oslo, Norway.
SGS was selected for the glass engineering due to their ability to deliver technical and aesthetical solutions matching the complexity of the project. The building design is founded on the interplay between three primary materials; natural stone; metal; and glass. Ideas of keeping each material sharply defined corresponded well with SGS design solutions and construction methods.
Tom Holtman, Creative Director of Snøhetta:
– We consider sgs as one of the absolute top suppliers in Europe (and thereby the world) within their field. We appreciate their professionalism and sensitivity when it comes to understanding the complexity of a given problem.
The New Opera House might very well be the most complicated and technically demanding project for sgs so far. Surely it will also be one of the most rewarding, as the building is bound to make an everlasting impression on thousands of future visitors.
